STAR HAWKS: The Comic-Strip Brilliance of GIL KANE

An INSIDE LOOK at a cult classic…

In the late ’70s, comics great Gil Kane turned out the cult-fave newspaper strip Star Hawks, first with writer Ron Goulart and then, later, with Archie Goodwin and Roger McKenzie.

The whole series is finally back in print, thanks to the Library of American Comics and IDW, and the final installment of their three-volume hardcover archival collection is out 8/1.

Star Hawks was atypical in that, for the vast majority of its run, each daily strip was double-tiered, giving more room for Kane to tell an operatic tale of space-faring adventure. LOAC has taken advantage of the format: Each strip gets its own page so readers can dig that Kane art in oversized glory. (Toward the end of the run, the series downshifted to single-tier dailies and this volume reflects that by putting two strips per page when the change occurs.)

So, dig this EXCLUSIVE INSIDE LOOK at Star Hawks Volume 3. Here are 13 PAGES featuring Kane’s classic stylings:

Star Hawks Vol. 3 is available in comics shops 8/1. The 360-page, 9.25″ x 6.5″ hardcover lists for $39.99.
