SPIDER-MAN/SUPERMAN #1: KERRY CALLEN Found the Best Use of a RED Variant Cover

SUNDAY FUNNIES WITH KERRY CALLEN!

By KERRY CALLEN

Like many of us, um… mature fans, I absolutely loved the Superman vs Spider-Man tabloid comic when it came out 50 years ago, in 1976. DC and Marvel had never teamed up their heroes, so it felt truly magical. It almost blew my kid’s mind!

I don’t go to my local comic shop as much as I did when I was younger. I still go when there if  something interesting is hitting the stands. I recently picked up the new Superman/Spider-Man book from DC and the new Spider-Man/Superman from Marvel.

As I was browsing, a blank cover on a Spider-Man/Superman book caught my eye. Thinking it would be fun to draw on, I picked it up along with the other issues.

When I got it home, I thought, “A RED cover? What can I draw on a red cover?”

I didn’t really have the time to do a full acrylic painting, which would be opaque. Then it occurred to me Spider-Man has a red “Spider Signal.” Perfect! It was time to whip out a couple of red markers and a white color pencil—

It will be available for purchase at this year’s Lilac City Comicon in Spokane, Washington. The show runs June 6- 7.

Maybe I’ll see you there!

  1. Fun. That’s a cover I would have definitely considered. I’m guessing Spider-Man was in such a hurry he put his belt on upside down. But it works!

    • Oh! Ha ha! You’re right about the upside down signal. I sketched it out with both characters upright. As I was drawing it I decided Spidey should be flipped. Oops, didn’t flip his signal. Good catch.
