SNACK TIME: DC and AMC Team Up for Classic Comics POPCORN BUCKETS

A series of tins featuring classic covers of the Golden, Silver and Bronze Ages…

I find few things more amusing in collectordom than the explosion in popularity of special-edition popcorn buckets. They’re huge now, and I’ve even taken the splash the last couple years with my working Batsignal and Daily Planet newspaper box.

The be-all and end-all of popcorn buckets.

Now, to celebrate DC’s 90th anniversary (which was actually in 2025), the publisher and AMC Theatres have teamed up for a series of six tins that look like omnibi, with classic covers from the Golden, Silver and Bronze Ages. They also come with lanyards featuring other great covers.

The buckets include Action Comics #1, Superman #1, Batman #1, Wonder Woman #103, Justice League of America #102, and Showcase #4.

Dig ’em:

Several thoughts:

— They have evidently begun popping up in theaters and run $21.95 each. They will also be available at AMC’s website, where they are listed as “coming soon.”

— I am not clear on whether the lanyard cards are two-sided or if there are two types available.

— Nice to see Hawkman get some love.

— That Wonder Woman cover gets a lot of play, but I’m halfway surprised that’s the one they went with.

— The JLA cover, on the other hand, is a true head-scratcher. It’s from a beloved storyline, and I love artist Nick Cardy, but it’s not really an iconic image. Strange. (That said: FLOATING HEADS!)

  1. And JLA #102 is the only one of these I would really want. I love the story and the cover.

    • YES!!! I love those covers from that era. I would definately get that one too. Not sure if I would find myself in the theatre. Hopefully once they are availabe online (https://amctheatresshop.com/collections/dc-collectibles) I will know about it. Kinda missing the boat not having them available for order once the word is starting to get out.

      • You can sign up to be notified when the buckets are available for purchase. That’s what I did.

        • I didn’t see anything to sign-up there. I did see how complete sets are going for ~$300 on eBay. I hope this isn’t a promotional like some of the rare figures from McFarlane that are sold out the day they go on sale.

          • Me too. When I clicked on JLA #102 to see if they were accepting preorders, screen popped up asking if I wanted to be notified when it went on sale.

          • I went back to the site. If you click the “quick view” I got a webpage saying they were sold out. If you click off the text description I got page offering an alert once available. Hopefully it works. Confidence is not high.

          • I won’t be heartbroken if I don’t get the popcorn bucket; I’d rather have deluxe editions of the Len Wein and Steve Englehart runs from JLA instead.

  2. It’d be my guess that the lanyards are double sided. At least that’s how it looks to me though I could be mistaken.

  3. “omnimatopoeia” (noun) the formation of a heavy book, typically hardcover, occasionally slipcased, from a series of smaller comics associated with a particular character, story arc, or theme.

I recently purchased via BackerKit the Dick Tracy newspaper volumes (1-4). They came in a slipcase. I have to say it really adds a nice touch to the book and its presentation. I would buy more books that offer this especially if the books are soft covers.
