Remastered FILMATION AQUAMAN Leaving HBO MAX

PLUS fellow classics Justice League, Justice League Unlimited and Batman: The Brave and the Bold…

UPDATED 1/3/22: OOPS! Aquaman and the three other series will be on HBO Max through January. My boo-boo. Details here. — Dan

Not good news, folks: The beautifully remastered 1967 Filmation Aquaman series — along with all of the “super superhero” guest star segments — is leaving HBO Max at the end of the month, according to the streamer’s new schedule.

In addition, three powerhouse animated series — Justice League, Justice League Unlimited and Batman: The Brave and the Bold — are also going out as the New Year is rung in.

It’s an unpleasant development for fans of all four shows, to be sure, but the Aquaman situation is especially frustrating: The streaming version was remastered but the episodes available to purchase online and elsewhere are still old-school muddy. Which is a crying shame because the remastered versions are absolutely gorgeous. (The other three series are all on Blu-ray.)

All four series joined the streamer together in early 2021 so this is likely the platform’s typical churn. The shows will probably resurface eventually, whether it’s back on HBO Max or perhaps Amazon Prime. Who knows how long it could take, though?

From 2019

I just wish Warner Bros. Discovery would put the remastered Filmation Aquaman series and its guest segments — Atom, Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, Justice League of America and Teen Titans — on Blu-ray, just as it plans to remaster and re-release the 1968 Adventures of Batman in that format in a couple months. (And, hey, WBD, how about some remastering love for 1966’s The New Adventures of Superman?)

As always, time will tell. I suppose it’s just like when we were kids when our favorite shows would disappear from the local syndication channels only to pop up another time.

The more things change…

  1. Tons of content is leaving HBO MAX. The speculation is so they can license the shows to free, ad-supported streaming services. Still stinks, though.

    • NOT a rumor…it’s a full fledged plan…they were already licensing to TUBI even before Discovery took over – and a lot of good stuff from the 1950’s to the 1980’s! (Including the remastered SHAZAM! 28 episodes!) as well as CHiPs (Which they now own)

I’m still waiting for THE FBI (1965-1974) to turn up – Warners made new transfers a decade ago for the DVD sets! I doubt we’ll see F TROOP since it’s “Politically incorrect” (which is the same reason Universal hasn’t put “McHale’s Navy” on PEACOCK!)

    • There are rumors that Warner Bros. Discovery is making their own free, ad-supported streaming service to compete with Pluto (Paramount Global), Tubi (FOX Broadcasting), and Xumo (Comcast).

  2. My DVD copy of this is pretty beautiful. I thought that was a remastered print already. Is that not right?

  3. I am recovering from the flu, and while trying to relax I was perusing this site, one of my favorites. While I was reading this article I tuned into HBO Max and started watching. While watching I immediately thought of those DC Silver Age 9″ action figures from 1999, Aquaman, Batman, Green Arrow, Green Lantern, and Superman.

  4. This is why I hate streaming. What films and TV series you have in your collection can be removed at any time.

    • Not much new I care to see, so owning and ripping what I want to see is the way to go for me.

  5. Let’s not forget Superboy, never out on disc, just VHS. The promise of streaming and the reality are like the grand canyon, wide and deep

  6. Not that I would *ever* suggest such a thing, but the 1080P remastered version can be made to..fall off the back of the internet as it were if you *really* want it. Just sayin’ *whistles*
