NEW FEATURE! The Making of ‘She Makes Comics’

We’re proud to bring you a new feature here at 13th Dimension — The Making of ‘She Makes Comics’ — the much-buzzed-about documentary about women in comics.Starting today, we’re bringing you weekly or biweekly updates on the film’s progess in direct cooperation with the filmmakers, from the Kickstarter campaign to premiere. Today, producer Patrick Meaney explains what this is all about and tomorrow, producer/director Marisa Stotter will write about how she made her way to the world of comics. Join on us on this fascinating journey!

Now, here’s Patrick Meaney:

Over the past few years, I’ve produced several documentaries about the world of comics through my company Respect Films and our partners Sequart. I’ve been a big comics fan for a long time, and it’s been an incredible opportunity to get to tell the stories of some of my favorite creators like Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis, Neil Gaiman, Chris Claremont and the Image founders.

While doing focus group screenings for “The Image Revolution,” I had a bunch of people ask me if there were any women involved in the creation of comics. Image’s story was a very male-centric one, but those questions revealed the fact that a lot of people don’t know just how involved women have been in creating comics since the medium’s inception, and that eventually led to Respect Films, Sequart and director Marisa Stotter developing “She Makes Comics,” a film that would celebrate the history of women in comics.

We developed the basic idea, then reached out to Karen Green, the graphic novels librarian at Columbia University, and curator of the university’s comics archive, which includes materials from Chris Claremont, the Pinis and many more. She helped us pick out a slate of initial interviewees and we were off and running.

We decided to use Kickstarter to finance the film for a number of reasons. With movies like this, there’s not a huge audience, but there is a sizable one that’s very passionate about it, and that’s perfect for a crowdfunding campaign. We’ve been blown away by the support so far — more than 750 backers in just two weeks — and are just over 70 percent funded! It’s been amazing to see, and we’re excited to team up with 13th Dimension to give you some behind-the-scenes insight into the process of making the film, from this Kickstarter campaign to the final release.

Having created several films, I know that it’s a long process, and one that not a lot of people know about. We’re going to show you what it takes to turn a huge amount of history, and many, many hours of interviews into one finished film. We’ll be starting out tomorrow with a piece from director Marisa Stotter on why this project is important to her, and we’ll go from there!
