MARVEL Introduces RETROVISION Variant Covers That Mimic Silver and Bronze Age Art Styles

Kicking it old school with Dan Jurgens, Ron Frenz, Mike Allred and MORE…

Marvel Comics in July is producing a line of variant covers that pay tribute to comics-art styles of the past. These aren’t homages to any particular cover or artist, but the general sensibilities of (mostly) the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

  1. They should have let Michael Cho do the Captain America cover in his Kirby homage style. Better yet they should have reached out to Bronze Age artists like Ron Frenz, Keith Pollard, Ron Wilson, etc to truly capture the spirt of that much loved era.

  2. As an older fan, these don’t move me at all.

  3. A lot of these have missed the mark on the concept. I like seeing Larsen’s art, though.

  4. Most of these seem to be interpreting ‘comic art styles of the past’ as amateurish.

  5. For the most part, these are wonderful covers. I particularly like the X-Men cover although, oddly, the Uncanny X-Men cover doesn’t look as “dated” as I think it could have. As I look at the other commenters on this post, I’m surprised at how negative, critical and frankly, cynical they are. Personally, I appreciate the time and effort that goes into such work – work that I couldn’t do.
