Wednesday is the 85th anniversary of Wonder Woman’s first appearance in All-Star Comics #8, released Oct. 21, 1941, and DC took the opportunity to announce that Louise Simonson — one of comics’ most beloved and respected writers — will be taking over the Amazing Amazon’s flagship title for a four-issue stint in January.

With Tom King and Daniel Sampere leaving the series, Simonson and artist Cian Tormey’s first issue will hit Jan. 20, 2027 — kicking off what DC is calling the Year of Wonder. Simonson, who has only written WW in spots during her illustrious career, will be on the book with Tormey through April’s Issue #44. The following month, rising star Stephanie Williams will take over with artist Elena Casagrande for six issues, through Issue #50.

Additional creators and stories for DC’s Year of Wonder will be announced at a later date, the publisher said.

Simonson has only written one story for Wonder Woman’s main title — a seven-pager in 2010’s Wonder Woman #600 — and she’ll be setting up a new status quo: “In Simonson and Tormey’s story, Wonder Woman is determined to abolish the Amazon Safety Act and clear the way for her sisters to return to the shores of Man’s World,” DC said in a statement. “But after everything they have endured, are the Amazons ready to return, or have they given up on saving humanity from itself?”

Wonder Woman will be joined in the story by none other than Lois Lane.

“I haven’t written many books with female leads, and they don’t come any more iconic than Diana,” Simonson said. “Teaming her up with Lois Lane, another iconic character, is a dream come true. Throw in Granny Goodness and her Female Furies? It doesn’t get more fun than that.”

Wonder Woman #41 features a main cover by Ryan Sook and variant covers by Daniel Sampere, Walter Simonson, and Tormey. The issue also boasts a foil variant cover by David Nakayama and a Sweater Weather variant cover by Alexander Lozano.
