LAST WEEK’S COMICS TODAY With Dr. Christy Blanch

Hello, Comic Peeps!

Sean Von Gorman

It’s been a crazy week for me! I successfully defended my dissertation to complete my doctorate in education. So, it’s now Dr. Blanch, which I have to admit is super cool! I did have my sonic screwdriver with me during the defense, so I was totally prepared. And while I am super sad that Peter Capaldi is leaving Doctor Who after this season, I AM now a doctor and therefore, I can plead with the BBC to hire me to replace him! While I wait for their offer, I will totally practice “Dammit, Jim. I’m a doctor, not a (insert profession here). So, Dammit, Dan. I’m a doctor, not a columnist!! Oh, wait. I am a columnist. So, here it is.

First up, Image’s God Country #2 from Donny Cates, Geoff Shaw and Jason Wordie. This second issue totally makes it indisputable that God Country is something you should get! I seriously cannot wait for Issue #3. Tell your local comic shop that you want this book!

When DC’s The Wild Storm by Warren Ellis, Jon Davis-Hunt and Ivan Plascencia was announced, I wasn’t sure what to think. I don’t know why I doubted something Warren Ellis was writing, but one just never knows. Now after reading Issue #1, I’m sold and am looking forward to the next issue. In addition to an awesome story, the art really is phenomenal.

Finally, DC’s Super Sons #1 by Peter J. Tomasi, Jorge Jimenez and Alejandro Sanchez is a great insight into how different kids can be sometimes. If you want to imagine what it would be like if Batman and Superman grew up together (which I know has been done before), this is a story for you. I really enjoyed it and I think the art really helps to make you feel parts of these kid’s personalities.

Lightning Round: The Locke & Key Small World deluxe hardcover from IDW, Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez is beautiful. Anyone who loves this series, which should be everyone, needs to own this edition. … The Monsters Unleashed Doctor Strange book by Chip Zdarsky and Julian Lopez is not to be missed. Doctor Strange and monsters is something no one wants to miss. … And Marguerite Bennett, James Tynion IV and Steve Epting’s Batwoman: Rebirth #1 is amazing. I have been excited for this book since they announced it and it did not disappoint!

That’s it for now! Next week I will talk a little bit about the Comics Pro meeting I attended and what everyone can do to help your local comic shops! Until then, it’s Dr. Blanch out!

Toodle-Pip!
