Hello, Comics Readers!

By CHRISTY BLANCH
I hope you are all having an amazing week so far! I know everyone is gearing up for the Thanksgiving holiday next week, but please remember to support your local comics shops. I know it’s been a slow few weeks for many stores, so make sure you show them you love them!
Now, on to the picks!
First off, I really enjoyed Boom’s Slam #1 by Pamela Ribon and Veronica Fish. While I know very little about roller derby, I feel like I understand the love for the sport a little more now. We have a local team, the Cornfed Derby Dames, in Muncie, Ind., and they are huge supporters of our shop and are great people. Many of the ladies have told me that this book perfectly captures the feelings associated with derby. And I have to mention that I am a fan of anything Veronica Fish draws, so I am biased there but in a good way. Pick this book up and give it a read. I think you will enjoy it!
Next, I know I picked Marvel’s Jessica Jones #1 by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos a few weeks ago, but I have to pick #2 this week. I am so loving this book. A friend of mine calls me Jessica Jones minus the superpowers and I have a weak spot for her. As I stated with #1, I was worried about the new series but when I read it I was sold. And Issue #2 is even better. If you liked the show, check this out. If you didn’t watch the show, check this out. If you don’t know who Jessica Jones is, read this book and you will fall in love. I’m so looking forward to Issue #3!
Finally, a book I was unsure about, Marvel’s Thanos #1 by Jeff Lemire and Mike Deodato. I always love Lemire’s work, but I don’t know why I wasn’t sure I would like this or not. I was so pleasantly surprised. I just love Thanos, and by love I mean the same way I love Darth Maul – they are super-cool bad guys. If you need something to tide you over until the next Marvel movie, read this miniseries. The cliffhanger is excellent and the art is spectacular.
Lightning Round! Marvel’s Doctor Strange #14 by Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo continues to be one of the best series out there. Poor Doc! … Dynamite’s Kiss #2 by Amy Chu and Kewber Baal is super fun. I can’t believe I am reading a Kiss comic! Nothing against Kiss, so don’t send the hate! … Stranger Comics’ Vampire Hunter D: Message From Mars #1 by Sebastian Jones and Michael Broussard was crazy fun. I’m not sure what happened in this book but I know I enjoyed it!

I hope everyone is enjoying the column. I know I am having a blast writing it. The hardest thing is choosing books because there are so many great books out there. Speaking of great books, I would like to congratulate Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, Nate Powell and everyone at IDW for winning the National Book Award for March: Book Three. This is the first time a comic book has won this award and this is huge news for the industry. Please read this trilogy. Not only is it an important story that needs to be told, but this shows that comic books should be taken seriously. Comics are awesome.
More columning soon! Until then, Toodle-Pip!
