KIRBY’s DC Work Will Prove More Influential Than His MARVEL Years

13 DAYS OF KIRBY 100: John Morrow, the editor and publisher of Jack Kirby Collector, throws down the gauntlet.

Welcome to 13 DAYS OF KIRBY 100, our celebration of Jack Kirby’s centennial, produced in conjunction with TwoMorrows Publishing. Over 13 days, we’re serializing the publisher’s forthcoming book KIRBY 100, co-edited by Jon B. Cooke and John Morrow, and featuring essays and artistic contributions by 100 of the biggest names in comics, such as Alex Ross, Dave Gibbons, Walt Simonson, Mike Allred and many, many others.

We’ve got another special for you beyond our serializing of the book Kirby 100. In this special ADVANCE PREVIEW of TwoMorrows’ Jack Kirby Collector #72, which is being released 8/28 to coincide with the centennial, we present John Morrow’s opening column of the new issue.

Morrow is not just TwoMorrows’ publisher, he’s the editor of Jack Kirby Collector — and he’s got a real argument starter: The way he sees it, Jack Kirby’s DC Comics output will, in the long run, prove more influential than the work he did at Marvel.

So check out his piece and don’t hold back. (And check out the mag’s cover and table of contents, giving you a peek at what else the issue has in store.)

  1. Interesting argument and talking points, but I’m sure I’m not alone in saying I disagree.

    • Well, I for one, have been saying this for years. I LOVE the classic characters he worked on at Marvel, but like the author stated in this article, these concepts were watered down by other Marvel employees. At DC, he had free reign. I am ashamed to say, but I am at 36, and I am just now really reading Kirby’s works by Kirby. At the recent local comic con, I found fifteen of his Kamandi issues and his Dingbats issue. I haven’t read Dingbats yet, but the Kamandi books have been insane! And in a really good way. Last year, similarly I picked up the New Gods trades DC released. They were too much fun. And the Demon is always a hoot and one day I hope to pick up some of it also.

  2. With D.C. Kirby got to create a world/worlds. But that came to an end too. I don’t know if it is an either or thing ?

  3. For the most part, I like what you wrote, but I find some of your comparisons fallacious. I would compare the Eternals to the New Gods (though the Inhumans HAVE made it to TV).Still, an interesting article.

  4. I agree with the basic premise but the way it is presented here is, yes, silly and ill-formed. Really, John, think it through a little more.
