The MCU is back this week with Thunderbolts*, which is getting solid buzz — something Marvel really needs right now, especially with so much riding on July’s Fantastic Four: First Steps.

So, it’s time for a 13 COVERS gallery featuring the team’s oldest, best-known member — the world’s greatest dead-sidekick-turned-antihero, James Buchanan “Bucky” “Winter Soldier” Barnes — from the Golden Age to today.

* The meaning of the asterisk will be revealed in the movie.

  1. Does anyone in this forum know when Bucky’s full name was revealed to be James Buchanan Barnes? The earliest mention I’ve found was during the Roger Stern/John Byrne run on Cap’s series (my favorite of all-time), from around 1980. But it’s mentioned without fanfare, as if it were always known. Of course, Stern & Byrne are exactly the creators who would fill in the void of Bucky’s full name (Roy Thomas and Steve Englehart would be other likely candidates). But I’d be grateful for a definitive answer.

    • Thank you Warren. That does confirm my thoughts about Stern and Byrne. I fondly remember the summer I read Cap #252. Re-reading the “War & Remembrance” TPB takes me right back to that time.

In his first issue, Roger Stern wrote a column about how he had been inspired by the history and lore of the Brooklyn Bridge. He later made meaningful reference to a quote from Lincoln during his Superman run. So I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the name James Buchanan Barnes held some kind of significance for him.

  2. I’m curious if anyone knows why the colors of Bucky’s World War II uniform were altered when he saw publication in the sixties? It was not until Steranko drew the Captain America book for the uniform to return to the original color design.
