Summer schedules and whatnot wreak havoc, so it’s an abbreviated column this week. But there are some excellent choices!
Aimee LoSecco, JHU Comic Books, Manhattan
Star Wars: Lando #1, Marvel. The simple fact is that Charles Soule and Alex Maleev are doing Lando. LANDO. You know what? No. It’s Billy Dee. WE GET A BILLY DEE WILLIAMS COMIC, GUYS!!!
Archie #1, Archie Comics. It’s Mark Waid and Fiona Staples on Archie. Another power team on a classic character! How does it look inside, you ask? Like Archie meets Saga, sans the debauchery. And like, 20 covers!
Princeless: Raven the Pirate Princess #1, Action Lab. Fresh on the heels of Princeless Vol. 3, this spinoff by Jeremy Whitley and Rosy Higgins focuses on Raven Xingtao as she seeks out her brothers for some sweet, sweet revenge for stealing her inheritance. Just like the graphic novels, it’s action packed (it’s called Action Labs for a reason), busts gender norms and stereotypes, and is funny as all get-out!

It’s my HOT PICKS pinch-hitting debut!
Archie #1, Archie Comics. How can you not want to know what this is like?
Justice League of America #2. I was not sold at all when this book was announced. Seemed pointless and redundant. Well, never judge a book by its solicitation, because I dug the vibe (no pun intended) of the first issue. Bryan Hitch’s first issue was like a classic Satellite-era tale with modern trappings. So I want to see more …
Swords of Sorrow #3, Dynamite. I picked this up on a lark and dug the first two issues a lot. Plus, Tula Lotay cover!
Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #2. I’m so in for the New 45 Marvel but that’s a whole other column. Meanwhile, as the highly entertaining Secret Wars event plays out, come visit the original Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and his Spider-Brood.
