HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Justice League of America #75 Facsimile Edition, DC. A key issue from 1969 — written by Denny O’Neil — that brought Black Canary to Earth-One, gave her her sonic scream, took away Green Arrow’s money and had him grow a social conscience. An unofficial prologue to the Green Lantern/Green Arrow “Hard-Traveling Heroes” saga. (The original solicitation cover had a lighter background. Looks like it’s been color-corrected.)

Marvel Comics in the Late ’60s, TwoMorrows. Pierre Comtois’ latest deep dive into Marvel history. Always recommended.

Action Comics #583 Facsimile Edition, DC. The first part of the era-ending landmark Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? which came out 40 years ago this month. The second part will be out in May.

Barbara Gordon: Breakout #1, DC. Babs goes to jail because of GCPD Commissioner Vandal Savage’s continuing machinations to rid Gotham of the Batfamily. I don’t see this as a long-term book but it’s a cool enough premise.

The Spectacular Spider-Man #1 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. Lots of interesting hooks here. Its the 50th anniversary of the cult-fave Spider-Man title; it features the Tarantula, who is in the upcoming MCU flick Spider-Man: Brand New Day; and coincides with a miniseries called The Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day that starts this week. It was written by Gerry Conway and breakdowns were by Sal Buscema, both of whom died this year. (It’s actually the second time this FE has been released.)

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

New Avengers Modern Era Epic Collection: Secret Invasion, Marvel. While I found Bendis’ lengthy Avengers run a bit hit-or-miss overall, I did like Secret Invasion, especially for bringing misused characters like Mockingbird and Hank Pym back in the spotlight.

Batman in the Seventies, DC. A great collection of classic Bronze Age Bat-tales, now back in print.

Lobster Johnson Omnibus Vol. 1, Dark Horse. I never thought I’d get a Lobster Johnson omnibus, but I’m here for it.
