HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Batman #7, DC. There’s been a bit of ballyhoo surrounding this one. Matt Fraction and Jorge Jimenez’s Batman #7 features a four-page, fold-out, center-spread that approaches the Joker’s history from his mad point of view. Not many mainstream comics get this kind of treatment and, having seen it, it’s pretty groovy. (Love Cheerleader Joker!) By the way, here’s a fresh look back at the Clown Prince of Crime’s oh-so-many origins from over the decades.

Among the many covers are a logo variant and corner-box variant. Neato.

Betty and Me #1 Facsimile Edition, Archie. You’re always going to get me with mid-’60s Dan DeCarlo Archie.

JSA #17, DC. The penultimate chapter of the excellent JSA: Year One by Jeff Lemire and Gavin Guidry.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

The DC Encyclopedia: New Edition, DK Publishing. Aside from the fact that I love a good comics reference book, this is a good way to brush up on the many, many DC events that you may have missed in the last year or two.

X-Factor: The Original X-Men Omnibus Vol. 2, Marvel. Some of my favorite artwork by Walt Simonson here.

Thor Epic Collection: The Surtur War, Marvel. More Walt Simonson goodness here, with plenty of Beta Ray Bill to be found.

  1. Regarding the Thor Epic Collection release, I’m currently in the middle of reading Walt Simonson’s Thor omnibus (of the same material) for the first time. I’m about halfway through it. I really like it. I was mostly a DC kid growing up in the ’80s, so other than a Thor issue here and there, I missed most of this run. It’s not his best work (I prefer his run on Orion for its visual inventiveness), but it’s really good.

  2. Excited for Batman and the Simonson books. Simonson inked by Wiacek on X-Factor is great looking. Bob Wiacek is underappreciated.

  3. Did someone give Wolverine an exploding cigar on that X-Factor cover?
