HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Jim Aparo: Brave & Bold Artist, TwoMorrows. The (very) long-awaited hardcover, illustrated bio of one of the Bronze Age’s best. By Eric Nolen-Weathington and Jim Amash. (Click here for a SNEAK PEEK.)

World’s Finest #48, DC. I LOVE this idea. Not a Superman-Batman team-up, but an Ultraman-Owlman team-up! I’ve loved the Crime Syndicate ever since I first laid eyes upon them decades ago, so it’s a special occasion whenever they show up. Really looking forward to this one by Mark Waid and Marcus To (with a Dan Mora cover).

Detective Comics #575 Facsimile Edition, DC. Kicking off DC’s four-month Facsimile Edition run of Mike W. Barr’s Batman: Year Two. The first ish featured art by Alan Davis, natch, but Todd McFarlane took over with the next installment.

The sketch cover looks especially cool, too:

Batman Adventures: Mad Love Special #1 Facsimile Edition, DC. The 1993 Bruce Timm/Paul Dini classic that gave us Harley Quinn’s origin and was later adapted into the last episode of The New Batman Adventures. It won the Eisner Award for Best Single Issue.

Civil War #7 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. Wrapping the modern classic. I’ve enjoyed reading this for the first time.

Fantastic Four #8, Marvel. Dig the latest Joe Jusko corner-box variant.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

Green Arrow: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 1, DC. I try not to buy too many omnibi because they’re just not conducive to ease of reading, but this one is awfully tempting.

Alter Ego#198, TwoMorrows. I’ve always been fascinated with H.G. Peter’s work, but know practically nothing about him. Time to rectify that.

Back Issue #165, TwoMorrows. Features on the Kree-Skrull War, the Superman/Flash races, and the eternal struggle between Donald Duck and Gladstone Gander!

  1. I’m all for keeping the Green Arrow Golden Age omnibus in print, but I wish DC would get around to publishing the GA Silver Age omnibus.

Batman: Year Two continues to be one of the most disappointing comics of my youth because of the schizophrenic changes in artists over the course of the four issues (Davis and Neary for one issue to McFarlane and Alcala (and his overpowering inks) for two issues to McFarlane inking himself for the last issue). It was like having three different artists on four issues (all with completely different styles). This, to me, is one of the downsides of having editors with a writing background in charge of a visual medium. I wish DC would pay Alan Davis to redraw issues two to four for a “special edition” version of the series.

I am all for DC giving work to the old-guard creators that have an interest in working and can still deliver. I’d buy this without hesitation.

    • I’d be up for a Green Arrow Silver Age Omnibus, as well as a Volume 2 of his Golden Age stories to finish that era!
