HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

50th Anniversary Treasury Edition: Superman vs. the Amazing Spider-Man #1 Facsimile Edition, DC/Marvel. Or, as we fans simply call it: the Superman vs. Spider-Man Facsimile Edition. Readers have been clamoring for this for a long time, and now it’s here, complete with main, foil, sketch logo, and Alex Ross variant covers. Collect ’em all! (Jan. 2 was the actual 50th anniversary, by the by.)

Spider-Boy Team-Up #1 Facsimile Edition, Marvel/DC. Following the Spider-Boy #1 Facsimile Edition release from the fall, this is all part of the hype surrounding the Superman/Spider-Man treasury Facsimiles and the new one-shots coming in March and April. In case you didn’t remember, that Amalgam mash-up is the Legion of Super-Heroes and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Batman #5, DC. The debut of Lady Death Man! I can’t wait to find out what her connection is to the original Death Man. (Hint: Ojo means “Princess” — or a high-born young woman, or, alternatively, a pampered or rich girl.)

Jughead #327 Facsimile Edition, Archie. Jughead goes punk!

With a pitch-perfect variant cover!

The Brave and the Bold #28 Facsimile Edition, DC. Third time DC has released this one and I imagine this will happen every few years. This time, there are foil and logo sketch covers, too.

The Amazing Spider-Man #19, Marvel. Lotta good variant covers this week, yeah? This one by Leonardo Romero was originally slated for the cancelled Mighty Marvel Masterworks book line.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

JSA #15, DC. I love that original, bizarre Hawkman helmet with the tongue.

Dan adds: Year One continues! Plus, dig this pretty variant by Lesley “Leirix” Li:

Alpha Flight by Mantlo & Lee Omnibus, Marvel. One of the few long runs by Bill Mantlo I’ve not read! Plus, I’ve always liked Heather Hudson as Vindicator.

The Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection: Spider-Man – Threat or Menace?, Marvel. Worth buying just for the answer to the question, “What happens when Hydro-Man runs into Sandman?”

  1. Dan, where do you categorize non-facsimile reprints? Two books I pick up religiously are 1) Walking Dead Deluxe (not a facsimile–it colorizes the original and adds new material and commentary) and 2) the GI Joe: A Real American Hero Hama Files (closer, but doesn’t run original ads and has new commentary from the writer). Both good stuff–I’d love to see them covered in your facsimile love even if they’re a weird cousin to the actual facsimiles.

  2. What do people think of the paper used for Superman Vs ASM?
It’s not bad, but not quite as good as we had for Ra’s al Ghul treasury edition.
It’s more like crinkly newsprint, I guess. which I suppose is a good thing?
