HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Batman: Dark Patterns #12, DC. I’ve been championing this maxiseries by Dan Watters and Hayden Sherman for a year, and now it comes to an end. If you like a good, creepy, early days Batman-as-detective comic, this one fits the bill. Would love a sequel, though it does feel complete.

Super Sons: The Complete Collection Book Two TP, DC. DC Comics had such a good thing going with this series, written by Peter Tomasi. They never should have let Jon Kent get aged up.

Batman and Robin #27, DC. Speaking of, look who shows up in the latest issue of Batman and Robin.

Action Comics #1092, DC. Mark Waid’s run on Clark Kent Superboy has been right on from the start.

Justice League of America #21, DC. DC is funny sometimes. They do a fantastic job on their Facsimile line, but sometimes there’s the rare stumble. Now, the landmark JLA #21 is an outstanding choice, and I’m surprised it’s taken this long to get here. But, so far, there’s no hint of Justice League of America #22, the second part. I know they sometimes reprint single issues of multiple-part stories, but it’s still strange. Has a foil variant, but apparently not a logo variant. (Correct me if I’m wrong there. I can’t find one listed.)

Fantastic Four #11 Facsimile Edition, Marvel. The Impossible Man! Meanwhile, it won’t be long before we learn what Marvel has planned in 2026 for its Facsimile runs. I think Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a lock.

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #4, DC. Getting all Silver Age 80-Page Giant-ish (and Alan Moore) on us!

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

DC Finest: War — The Big Five Arrive, DC. Collected are some of DC’s great war comics from legendary creators like Joe Kubert, Ross Andru and Russ Heath.

1776 #1, Marvel. I have no idea what this is, but it’s by JMS, so I’m intrigued.

Dan: Basically, a bunch of Marvel heroes go into the past to preserve the founding of the United States, which is celebrating its 250th anniversary next year.

Micronauts Epic Collection: The Original Marvel Years — This Battlefield, Earth, Marvel. More of Bill Mantlo’s epic space opera, with art by Butch Guice and Gil Kane!

  1. Yes, DC had such a good thing going with a young Jon Kent, as written by Peter Tomasi. And yes, they never should have allowed Jon to get “aged up”. They allowed such a huge error to happen, and a slight to Tomasi who was writing such an enjoyable take on the Super family, in order to sign a “name” writer for the Superman title. Bah. Seeing Superman as a dad in a “real” timeline, as opposed to an “imaginary story”, brought me into reading a current comic again. The moments of Superman training his young son were excellent. So glad DC allowed Tomasi to continue here what he started in the Superman titles.

Regarding DC Finest’s The Big Five Arrive, I hope the inclusion of Blackhawk here is a one-off. The Blackhawks may have begun as a WWII team, but by the time they come to DC, they are a group of adventurers. I would really like a series of DC Finest Blackhawk collections, but wouldn’t buy the War book just to get only a handful of Blackhawk stories in color. I’ll stick to my Showcase black-and-white collection for now.

  2. I am with Dan, I certainly hope DC will distribute issue 22 of the JLA featuring the conclusion of this two part story. JLA 21 not only introduced me to the Justice Society, but cemented a love for the characters that has continued for six decades. I have ordered 200 copies of the book to give out on Halloween 2026. I want as many children as possible to experience the joy I had that magical summer day I saw JLA 21 on the shelf in a Woolworth’s store. If they publish the conclusion I’ll bag the two books and happily share them with visitors to Casa Dunne next Halloween.
