HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Batman #47 Facsimile Edition, DC. I’ve really been looking forward to this: A full reprint of the 1948 issue that gave us the first expansion of the Batman origin story and introduced Joe Chill into the mythos. A classic by every measure, by Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Charles Paris. Includes two other Bat-stories, including one featuring Catwoman. There are foil and sketch logo covers available too.

Scott adds: Incredibly iconic cover!

Batman #3, DC. OK, Fraction and Jimenez, you’re two for two. Now, here’s a real test: I’m of the mind that all the life has been taken out of the Riddler over the past few decades. He doesn’t have to be in a jumpsuit — though I’d much prefer it — but nobody wants to write him in that manic style embodied by Frank Gorshin. I’m not living in the past here; it’s just that that version remains the single best depiction of the Riddler there’s ever been, and the comics more or less followed suit for many years. People argue that just makes him a Joker knockoff but I couldn’t disagree more.

Anyway, my point is that the creative team has so far adeptly balanced the dramatic with the wink, so I’m very curious to see how that translates to Edward Nigma. (No Nashton or “Y,” please.) Side note: Paul Dano’s Riddler is a completely different animal — and I loved it.

Among the many covers is this Bat-Gadget variant by Jimenez spotlighting the hella cool new Batmobile:

JSA #13, DC. Beginning the six-part JSA: Year One, by Jeff Lemire and Gavin Guidry, with main covers by Dave Johnson. I’ve had this mentally bookmarked since we reported it on it a few months ago.

Charlie Brown and Snoopy Facsimile Edition, Titan. The latest reprint of the old-school mass market paperbacks. This one features strips from the classic years of 1963 and 1964 — including one of my all-time favorite Peanuts characters, “5.”

Die!namite: Blood Red #1, Dynamite. Written by our pal Fred Van Lente!

Sabrina, the Teen-Age Witch #1 Facsimile Edition, Archie. It was delayed from August, but now it’s here, so yay!

Doctor Doom Epic Collection: Enter… Doctor Doom, Marvel. Kinda thought this woulda come out in mid-2026 what with Avengers: Doomsday arriving in December of next year. But, hey, whatevs. Collects Doom’s earliest showdowns with the FF and a load of others: Fantastic Four (1961) 5-6, 10, 16-17, 23, 39-40, 57-60, 73; Fantastic Four Annual (1963) 2-3; Amazing Spider-Man (1963) 5; Avengers (1963) 25; Daredevil (1964) 37-38; Marvel Super-Heroes (1967) 20.

  1. The second Doom epic will be out early next year. I think they’re pumping these out. Astonishing Tales and Super-Villain Team-Up incoming!

    • If they do SVTU, it would be the first “Complete Collection” volume redone for the Epic Collection line. Raising the question — will all the CC volumes be rereleased in EC? Be good to know since some of them have gotten pricey.
