Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #2, DC. Issue #1, which I read on a lark because of some good buzz, was straight-up outstanding. Just outstanding. I don’t say this lightly at all, but W. Maxwell Prince and Martin Morazzo, the folks behind the acclaimed Ice Cream Man, are giving us a de facto sequel to All-Star Superman. Not in terms of story but in terms of storytelling sensibility and art. Wonderful. Keep it up! (Side note: Features one of the best depictions of Superman and Batman’s friendship I’ve ever seen.)

—
Action Comics #1090, DC. Only Mark Waid (or Grant Morrison) would come up with the idea of making Captain Comet part of Superman’s back story as Superboy.

With a chain-bursting corner-box variant, using the design/color scheme from the famed Superman #233:

—
Supergirl #5, DC. I’ve been hot and cold on this new series but before I make my final decision, I gotta give the Super-Pets a shot.

Also with the “Kryptonite Nevermore”/corner box variant:

—
Batman and Robin #25, DC. My Batman maxiseries titles are ending soon, so I’m thinking about getting back into some more ongoing Bat-titles since they’re at new jumping-on points. I miss Damian so I might, might give this a shot. (I’m just always reluctant to get deep into ongoings. They tend to be solid until the inevitable crossover events that rarely live up to the hype. Just my two cents.)

The Penguin needs a haircut, but the way. He should never be gross and scruffy, regardless of what Tim Burton wanted you to believe. (Exception allowed for Colin Farrell — but even his fabulous Oz Cobb has pretensions of refinement.)
—
Batman: Dark Patterns #10, DC. Speaking of maxiseries, this continues to be, without reservation, the best Batbook I’m reading these days. Excellent work all the way around by Dan Watters, Hayden Sherman and co.

—
Fantastic Four #9, Marvel. One of the great bananas early FF issues. The FF make a movie — but it’s all a plot by Namor to destroy them!

—
Captain America #11, Marvel. The Ben Cooper-style Halloween mask variants are out! Did you pick up Spider-Man last week?

Great Benjamin Su Stitch cover too:

Great Michael Cho cover too:

Great Chip Zdarsky cover too:

—
Eddie Brock: Carnage #8, Marvel. Man, weeks like this make me want to revive the BEST VARIANTS OF THE WEEK feature. Another fab Alex Ross “Timeless” cover!

—
Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens #4 Variant Cover by Angel Hernandez, IDW. I love Jet Jaguar.

—
Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension
DC Finest: Horror — The Devil’s Doorway, DC Comics. I must admit, one of my blind spots in comics history is DC’s horror output. I look forward to rectifying that with this.

—
Micronauts Epic Collection: The Original Marvel Years — Home Sweet Homeworld, Marvel. More of Bill Mantlo’s classic space opera, with art by Pat Broderick!

—
The Undead Iron Fist #1, Marvel. If this gets us one step closer to Danny Rand returning to the land of the living, I’m all for it.

Huntress should ONLY be Helena Wayne, member of the Justice Society…period.

Singing to the choir, my brother. I so agree.

Indubitably!

I’m going to miss Dark Patterns after it’s concluded.
I think you’ll enjoy Batman and Robin.
I’ve been reading since issue one and it’s been one of my favorites.
Not sure if you read trades or not? But the arcs that’d come out thus far might be worth your time?

Thanks! Good to know! If I like it, I can always go back!
