HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Mad — Free Comic Book Day 2024, DC. Don’t forget that May 4 is Free Comic Book Day, folks — and our pal Kerry Callen’s got the cover for this Mad special issue!

Gatchaman #0 — Free Comic Book Day 2024, Mad Cave Studios. I am really, really looking forward to this series and its offshoots. I loved Battle of the Planets as a kid when it was in after-school syndication, but right now my son and I are doing a complete watch of the original Japanese Gatchaman, which is far superior. (Not even close.) It’s a terrific show on just about every level. If you’ve never watched it, seek it out. There’s even a Blu-ray set featuring Alex Ross art. (Dig the Chris Samnee cover!)

Jonny Quest — Free Comic Book Day 2024, Dynamite. Dynamite has a new Jonny Quest series coming, and here’s a taste. (Dig the Chris Samnee cover!)

Doctor Who: The Fifteenth Doctor, Titan. Can I just say that Ncuti Gatwa was great in Sex Education but is downright hot as the Fifteenth Doctor? Well, he is.

Space Ghost #1, Dynamite. Dynamite has a new Space Ghost series too, and here’s the first issue. Dig the Gold Key-flavored variant cover by Michael Cho.

There’s also an Alex Toth model sheet variant!

The Manga Guide to Japanese Food, Tuttle Publishing. I’m going to Japan later this year, so this is right in my wheelhouse. Plus, I’ve been reading DC/Kodansha’s Superman vs. Meshi and it is HILARIOUS! Highly recommended!

Scott Tipton, columnist, 13th Dimension

Absolute Justice League: The World’s Greatest Super-Heroes by Alex Ross and Paul Dini, DC. These giant-size specials are some of my favorite DC work of the period.

Get Fury #1, Marvel. Garth Ennis is a perfect fit for a period Nick Fury/Punisher crossover.

Dan adds: All of Ennis’ Fury and Punisher Cold War/Vietnam stories have been tremendous. This has great potential.

Thunderbolts Epic Collection Vol. 2: Wanted Dead or Alive, Marvel. Busiek and Bagley’s Thunderbolts is hands down the most underrated comic of the ’90s.
