HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Batman #428: Robin Lives!, DC. A “Faux-simile Edition” of the infamous issue where Jason Todd was killed — only this time, DC is printing the alternate version, as if fans had voted for him to live. Since I was one of those who voted to spare his life, I’m really eager for this one. Also: This just might be the most clever idea either of the Big Two has had this year.

World’s Finest: Teen Titans #6, DC. The finale of the wonderful miniseries by Mark Waid and Emanuela Lupacchino. I am so sad this is only six issues. It’s been fabulous. But here’s my obligatory drumbeat: I really want to see an early-days Batman and Robin series set in the WFverse, by Waid and Chris Samnee, who did the main covers of WF: TT. Scott adds: I was really hoping for a Golden Eagle and Bat-Girl appearance, but this is still pretty close.

And here’s the last of the Doc Shaner character variant covers. (Why is Aqualad always last?)

There’s also a variant by World’s Finest artist Dan Mora:

Batman #405 Facsimile Edition, DC. Part 2 of DC’s weekly reprinting of Batman: Year One. This one sells itself, so I have nothing to add.

Nightwing Vol. 4: The Leap, DC. Best ongoing series in comics right now. I love it because it’s almost the Platonic ideal of what I imagined a grown-up Robin, the Teen Wonder would be like. Tom Taylor, Bruno Redondo and everyone else working on this book deserve all the accolades they’ve been getting.

Captain America #4, Marvel. Dig this Adi Granov variant riff on the classic Avengers #100 cover.

Godzilla: Best of Gigan One-Shot, IDW. I love that giant space chicken. And dig that James Biggie cover. Love that guy too.

Ultraman: The Official Novelization, Titan. An adaptation of the classic series’ first season. Wow! Jim Beard, did you know about this? (If you’re an Ultraman fan, check out Jim’s TOP 13 Grooviest Episodes of the Original Series.)

Absolute Watchmen, DC. A new edition but whatever. I’d be derelict in my duty if I didn’t mention that this was out this week.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

DC’s ’Twas the Mite Before Christmas #1, DC. I’ll always show up for a new Bat-Mite comic.

The Art of Marvel Studios Moon Knight, Marvel. Sure hope there’s a second season of this in the works.

  1. How was the paper and colors on the Batman #404 reprint? Up to snuff?
