HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Batman #404 Facsimile Edition, DC. I love that DC in December is printing each issue of Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s Batman: Year One on a weekly basis. A lot of eyes will be on the color reproduction because that has been a bone of contention in the past — especially with Mazzucchelli himself. The solicitation says the coloring will be the original, but, oddly, the cover seems to deviate. That just could be how the digital image reads online, however. We’ll find out Tuesday.

Batman #5 Facsimile Edition, DC. Kind of a weird one for a Facsimile Edition — the first appearance of the Batmobile — especially when you consider how many other FEs DC hasn’t gotten around to yet. But, hey, I’ll take it — happily. Plus the sketch cover and foil cover too! (Pssst, where’s Batman’s chest emblem?)

Batman #140, DC. I think when it comes down to it, Frank Cho is one of the top four or five artists working in comics today. I just love this variant cover, which gives off a definite Golden Age vibe while also being indelibly modern. (Realistic-Looking Joker is always a Scary Joker. And what lighting!)

Adventure Comics #260 Facsimile Edition, DC. A never-reprinted Superboy story is on the cover but this one’s notable for Aquaman’s Silver Age origin. Plus, a Green Arrow tale! For four bucks! Such a deal!

Archie Christmas Spectacular One-Shot, Archie. Tales to tickle your mistletoe.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

Wonder Woman: The Golden Age Omnibus Vol. 1 (New Edition), DC. Of all the DC Golden Age material, Moulton and Peter’s Wonder Woman work is by far the most distinctive and unique, and always needs to be exposed to the modern audience.

Army of Darkness Movie Adaptation 30th Anniversary, Dynamite. I’ve always meant to read this but never picked it up, but the inclusion in this hardcover of an interview with Bruce Campbell conducted by Kurt Busiek has me sold.

Marvel Universe by Arthur Adams Omnibus, Marvel. I don’t know how you could resist 400 pages of Art Adams Marvel material.
