HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

Batman #135 (aka #900), DC. It’s Batman #135! No, it’s Batman #900! Either way, Patrick at Dr. Cain’s Comics in San Luis Obispo, California, wrote in with this recommendation: “Hey Dan. Just wanted to give you a heads up that next week’s Batman 135/900 is a total celebration of an issue. I don’t want to give away anything but when I read it, one of the things I thought was that you and the 13th Dimension readers were going to love what they’ve done. Hope all is well.” Well, heck, you can’t go wrong with that! Oh, and there’s a Neal Adams variant! (By the way, I checked out the ish based on Patrick’s recco — and dang, he’s 100 percent right! Go grab it! Thanks, Patrick!)

The Avengers: War Across Time #5, Marvel. The finale of Paul Levitz and Alan Davis’ fabulous tribute to Silver and Bronze Age Marvel. Helluva debut by Professor Levitz; this has been an especially fun experience. Do Spidey next, Paul!

Batman #181 Facsimile Edition, DC. This is the second time DC has offered Batman #181 — featuring Poison Ivy’s debut — as a Facsimile Edition. The difference this time is there’s a foil variant and another groovy sketch variant featuring one of the greatest Batman logos of all time. Hell, the sketch variant’s even a dollar more. I will say, though, that while I’m really happy to see the Go-Go Checks on the sketch cover, I’m disappointed they included the red background. It looks great on Batman #181 in full, but the sketch variant should have a white background, like the Batman #357 Facsimile Edition version.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

Shazam! #1, DC. Mark Waid writes Captain Marvel! My most anticipated new series in years.

Main Dan Mora cover

Dan adds: Yeah, I’m looking forward to this one too, especially since this is a sort-of sister book to the ever-entertaining World’s Finest. Dig the Chris Samnee variant:

Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil, DC. Happy to see this great Shazam! offering by Jeff Smith back in print. I wish we could see a re-release of the 1940s original, but today’s culture makes that increasingly unlikely.

Dan adds: I really enjoyed this. It annoys a lot of old-school Captain Marvel fans but I dig it. Lots of fun.

Avengers West Coast Epic Collection: California Screaming, Marvel. Always pleased to see more West Coast Avengers work back on the shelves.

  1. I can’t wait to read “War Across Time”. The trade version is finally showing up in my Amazon listing. It was an easy decision to hit the pre-buy button.
