HOT PICKS! On Sale This Week!

Scott and Dan pick the comics they’re most looking forward to…

Dan Greenfield, editor, 13th Dimension

The Comic Book History of Animation, IDW. Fred Van Lente (a 13th Dimension columnist) and his frequent collaborator Ryan Dunlavey are back with another “Comic Book History” series. Oh, and did you know that to celebrate we’re holding BATMADNESS: The Animated Tournament? Click here!

Batman: Black & White #1, DC. The famed anthology series returns and this kickoff issue features the wild and wooly talents of Tradd Moore, J.H. Williams III, Andy Kubert, G. Willow Wilson and Greg Smallwood.

DC’s Very Merry Multiverse #1, DC. Any holiday anthology featuring President Superman and Sunshine Superman is all right by me.

Superman: Endless Winter Special #1, DC. Isn’t it nice when an event is really just a self-contained story with larger scope? Ron Marz, Andy Lanning, Phil Hester, Ande Parks and co. bring you Part 3 of Endless Winter in this Super-special.

Scott Tipton, contributor-at-large, 13th Dimension

The Deadman Omnibus, DC Comics. This is a fantastic collection of most of Deadman’s Bronze Age appearances. With art by Neal Adams, Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez and Jim Aparo, you can’t go wrong.

What If We Were…, Top Shelf. This French import about two teenage best friends and their imaginative flights of fancy is utterly charming and one of my favorite books of the year. Highly recommended. By Axelle Lenoir.

Thor Epic Collection: The Thor War, Marvel. The DeFalco/Frenz era of Thor isn’t at the top of my list but I did enjoy this period, mostly because it was heavy on my main man Beta Ray Bill.

  1. I know that DC has cancelled most of their facsimile edition releases, but as far as I can tell, the Superman vs Wonder Woman tabloid facsimile is still scheduled for release this week. Is it not considered a hot pick? Or is it not being released on schedule, or has it been cancelled with all the rest? America wants to know!

    • It is indeed out this week — and was a complete oversight on my part. Thanks for keeping me honest!

      • Thanks for your reply Dan. I am relieved to hear that it is still going to be released this week. Even though I own an original copy, I hear the siren call of the facsimile edition.

  2. I became interested in DC’s “Endless Winter” storyline through their current “Justice League” comic, so of course I’m invested in reading the “Superman” portion of the storyline.

  3. Was beginning to think you were losing the love for DC until I saw this week’s picks!

    • Hahahahaha. No, hardly. It’s just that right now DC and I are on different wavelengths. They’re putting out fine material that I really hope succeeds. It’s just that I’m not their target audience, so I don’t always have something to pick in a given week.

      • I haven’t been DC’s “target audience” since around 2001 but I was too stubborn to admit it until Brian Michael Bendis took on Superman. What happened was I eventually got over it, dropped all my new books and began collecting back issues of WARLORD (which DC doesn’t seem interested in reprinting as an omnibus or trade paperbacks) instead.

I still go into my LCS once a week to buy the latest Marvel Epic Collection or Classic DC reprints, but I also get one or two WARLORD comics with each visit. I should have a complete collection by the middle of next year and I can start collecting ARAK, SON OF THUNDER!

The Old DC…there’s no stopping me now!
