FRANCO’S FREE-FOR-ALL FRIDAYS!

It’s been a while since I’ve written a proper “adult” comic, though I kinda hate using the term “adult.” Maybe “mature,” or “for older people”?
You see, I’ve generally become known for writing and drawing kids’ stuff or “middle grade” fare for the younger crowd, and not known for the more “grown-up” stuff of late.
Back in the day, I did my share of vampire stuff. Love vampires. And my last book for “older” readers was The Green Team: Teen Trillionaires for DC Comics in 2013. Now, I’ve got a new one with my pal Scoot McMahon (my partner in Ninja Kaiju) — Ghost Moon, a more traditional superhero book that’s now live on Kickstarter.
Here’s how we describe it: When an ordinary woman suddenly gets extraordinary abilities, she expects a learning curve — not a cosmic crash course! Selena Luna is wildly unprepared for the destiny unfolding in front of her. Powers she barely understands, dangers she could never even imagine — some from not of this Earth, and every choice she makes pulls her deeper into danger and a universe that will be coming after her.
Now caught between who she was and what she has now become, she must survive her own problems with her family and friends and the universe that is coming for her, a universe full of gods, monsters and even the stars themselves. Having power is not enough — you have to be ready for it, and the answer is clear… she’s not… yet.
What label would you put on that? “Adult” has a certain connotation and while it’s more geared toward adults, the younger crowd could read it too. I’ve always had a problem with the “kids’ stuff” term, as well, since I consider almost everything I do for ALL AGES. Ever since I worked on Tiny Titans for DC (heck, even way before that with Patrick the Wolf Boy and other comics), I would have adults always tell me how much they enjoyed them.
Anyway, Scoot and I wrote Ghost Moon together and the artwork is by me. It’s been even longer since I’ve drawn a comic like this. My style is a bit more non-cartoony, but still has some elements of that.
Regardless, it’s a genuine superhero comic — an experiment that’s hard for me to place with a publisher because I’m known as the “kids’ content” guy. There’s one issue (so far — let’s see how we do) where I can do whatever I want. And if other people want it too, then I plan to make more. But one step at a time.

Franco and his forehead have traveled the world and he writes and draws stuff. Franco is the creator, artist and writer of Patrick the Wolf Boy and Aw Yeah Comics! Franco has worked on books/comics, including Tiny Titans and Superman Family Adventures. Franco was also a high-school teacher and is one of the principal owners of Aw Yeah Comics retail stores. Dan made Franco add that he has won three Eisners.
