FUTURISTIC: New History of SPACE AGE POP CULTURE Coming in 2024

TwoMorrows and Mark Voger have another lushly illustrated history hardcover beaming down…

Mark Voger — you cannot stop him! You can only hope to contain him!

The prolific chronicler of pop culture is back this year with another heavily illustrated, oversize hardcover from TwoMorrows — Futuristic: Rockets, Robots and Rayguns of Space Age Pop Culture.

Dig the official description:

Blast off to the Space Age, when the future was always bright! Futuristic is a full-color hardcover about a time of limitless possibilities… and anxieties. It covers all aspects of 1950s and ’60s pop culture from the “duck and cover” era of the Cold War, the Space Race, the UFO Craze, and the 1969 moon landing. Read about the movies (The Day the Earth Stood Still, Invasion of the Body Snatchers), TV shows (Tom Corbett: Space Cadet, The Jetsons), and collectibles (robots, rockets, comic books, TV tie-ins) that had us looking to the stars. Also featured are interviews with such comic book creators as William Gaines, Joe Orlando, Julius Schwartz, Robert Kanigher, Ross Andru, Mike Esposito, and Larry Lieber about their sci-fi work, plus recollections from sci-fi movie stars (Kevin McCarthy, Peter Graves, Linda Harrison), TV cast members (from shows including Lost in Space, Star Trek, and The Invaders), and others. A graphically immersive experience written and designed by Mark Voger (Monster Mash, Zowie!), Futuristic is a time trip to a future that never exactly came to pass, but lives on vividly in our imaginations!

A few thoughts:

— The 192-page, full-color hardcover lists for $44.95 and is due Nov. 12, 2025. (Date subject to change.) It will be available through comics shops and booksellers, but you can pre-order it now, directly from TwoMorrows. Click here.

— Mark’s books are incredibly well researched, wonderfully illustrated and a joy to read. This is the sixth such book in his run at TwoMorrows, following Monster Mash, Groovy, Holly Jolly, Britmania and Zowie! We’ve excerpted just about all of them over the years — and even serialized Groovy and Zowie!

— I hope the book does something on this really cool, battery-operated Japanese tin space capsule I had when I was a kid. The best part was turning off the lights while it did its thing:

  1. Love that cover art. It really captures the vibe of the content it seems. Certainly screams ‘50s space fiction. I am hoping the back cover shows the whole artwork without all the additional elements. A bit pricey but I’ll definitely be ordering this as we get closer to its publication date. 2025 is certainly making a play for my $$$.
