EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: A Detective Comics #27 Facsimile Edition variant…

DC Comics has five Facsimile Editions coming in August and you can get the details for the others here and here.
This one is another reprint of 1939’s Detective Comics #27 — but for a lot of fans, the selling point will be the latest Super Powers variant cover, by Jason “ToyOtter” Geyer and Alex Saviuk:

Dig the official solicitation info, which will be formally released by DC later Friday:

Buncha thoughts:

The back cover for The Dark Knight Returns #1 Facsimile Edition variant, showing the other Super Powers covers in this third wave
— As with Action Comics #1 — also coming in August — I’ve lost count of how many times DC has produced Facsimile Editions of Detective Comics #27. But if they keep making them, it means they keep selling them.
— For those wondering, this issue will be in current comics dimensions.
— This was announced a while back, but this is the first time we’ve actually seen this Super Powers cover. McFarlane Toys has four Super Powers waves left this year, and I’d be willing to wager a First Appearance Batman will be among them.
— As I noted up top, there are more DC Facsimiles coming in August — including more Batman. Links below!

just curious… what size will this comic be? godlen age size?
May 23, 2026
I’m guessing current size, because of the $6.99 cover price. All of the Golden Age size facsimiles were $9.99 (except, ironically, the 2024 Detective #27 which was $7.99).

It is current size. I should have noted that and I’ll add it.

To the best of my knowledge, this will be the third go-around for the Detective Comics #27 Facsimile Edition in the modern Facsimile Edition era (which began with Fantastic Four #1 in 2018).
The first came out in 2022 (8/23/22) and had a barcode on the cover. The second one came out in 2024 (9/21/24), was Golden Age size, and for some stupid reason was printed on “aged” paper to present as if it were actually printed in 1939 and was (in 2024) 85 years old.
Prior to that, there was the Famous First Edition tabloid from 1974.
Those are the only times that I’m aware of Detective Comics #27 being reprinted in its entirety. The 2000 Millennium Edition reprint is close, but not complete – it doesn’t include the inside front cover, inside back cover, outside back cover, or (according to the Grand Comics Database) the “Stamp Collectors’ Corner” text page.
And on the topic of reprints that don’t qualify as facsimiles, the Super Powers variant is not a true facsimile because the Super Powers graphics replace the original cover and back cover. They look great, and collectors should by all means buy ’em if they like ’em, but they’re not facsimiles, just reprints.

That Batmobile on the back is obviously the taxi cab vehicle from The Shadow movie toy line. I bought one of those myself to make just such a Batmobile. Another project which I still haven’t gotten around to.
