I imagine there are 5-year-olds out there who pick up a comic book with Alex Ross’ art on the cover and are immediately struck by a world of possibility and adventure. Ross’ Rockwellesque style makes you believe not only that a man can fly but women and teens and all sorts of good guys and bad guys.

Jack Kirby is almost the opposite — a visionary whose latter-day approach was ever blockier and bombastic, less realistic and more powerful because of it. Yet it’s precisely the kind of art that captured the mind of a 5-year-old Alex Ross — as he tells it here:
