Dig This Marvelous Rarity: RAMONA FRADON’s SPIDER-MAN

A SUNDAY FUNNIES WITH KERRY CALLEN birthday tribute…

By KERRY CALLEN

I’m a big fan of Ramona Fradon’s art. Back in the ’60s, one of the first comics I remember seeing was a coverless Metamorpho book. It contained, of course, her art. Metamorpho, along with her Aquaman stories, are classics. Her birthday was a few days ago on October 2. Sadly, she is no longer with us. (She was born in 1926 and died in 2024, at the age of 97.)

I recently stumbled across a Spider-Man sketch by Ramona, a rarity I believe. As I sometimes do with classic artists, I thought, “I would love to ink and color that!” So, I did.

Please consider it my Ramona Fradon birthday tribute!

  1. It reminds me a lot of the Bakshi animated Spidey!

  2. How am I still so happy to see this idiot after forty-seven years? Paper and ink, digital pixels, ABS plastic. It’s baffling.

This Spidey looks ripped straight from the splash of a run from a better timeline. Very much in that early Spectacular Spider-Ma —

    — nd as if by magic, my alarm goes off. The fanfare from the Bakshi cartoon theme tune.

Thanks for sharing this, Kerry. Great job on the finishes.

And happy birthday in absentia, Ramona.
