A moody piece by one of the Darknight Detective’s greatest artists…
As I often do, I was poking around the web the other day for cool comics art and I happened upon a very groovy Batman illustration by the late, great Marshall Rogers, up for sale at Heritage Auctions.
Dig this:
After Neal Adams, Rogers is, to my way of thinking, the greatest Batman artist to have ever walked the Earth, and this piece was done in his late ’70s heyday.
Heritage’s official description: Marshall Rogers – Batman Illustration Original Art (1978). This moody piece was created in ink and marker over graphite on 12″ x 9″ spiral-bound art pad paper. Signed and dated 1978 in the lower right. The paper is discolored, with chipping along the edges, and a missing piece in the lower center from bug-chew. Some of the ink has changed hue to a brownish color. In Fair condition.
Bidding is only up to $210, though who knows how far it will go. It’s part of Heritage’s mid-January Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction and you can track the piece here.

I’m right there with you on Rogers. And in fact, for the character of Batman specifically, depending on the day, I prefer Rogers’ Batman. But Adams obviously did more with, and more for the character and his world. This is gorgeous!

I love Rogers’ artwork but I’d not be interested as much in a vignette illustration but rather a page of his continuity.
