Dig This Beautiful Pulpy BATMAN Sketch by JOHN K. SNYDER

Party like it’s 1939!

Man, that John K. Snyder really knows how to channel the Golden Age, doesn’t he?

Dig this 1930s Batman commission he did for the back cover of a copy of Detective Comics #1000:

That is all sorts of pretty. I happened to find it on Facebook just as I was planning a two-fer from the vaults on superheroes and their pulp roots: one on IRV NOVICK’s GREATEST BATMAN PAGE, which is from the first Batman/Shadow team-up in the ’70s, and the other the TOP 13 SUPERHEROES INSPIRED BY THE PULPS — RANKED.

Eisner nominee Snyder’s best work includes the ’90s Doctor Mid-Nite mini with Matt Wagner; Suicide Squad; and Fashion in Action.

  1. It’s not the back cover, it’s a blank/sketch cover. They’ve been printing them for the recent reprints including Batman #1.

    • Yes, it is the back cover. The sketch cover for Detective #1000, as most sketch covers are, was a wraparound. He drew on the back.

  2. Love Snyder’s work.
If you have never seen his two Prowler miniseries that he did with Tim Truman you should check them out. Still one of my favorite series from the 80s
