Dig These Utterly Gorgeous 13 SEA DEVILS COVERS

Because it’s National Beach Day!

This is how my mind works: John S. Drew and I recently did a FILMATION FILES episode of the World’s Greatest Super Friends Podcast focusing on the Aquaman episode “The Devil Fish,” which is a kinda/sorta team-up between the Swift and Powerful Monarch of the Ocean and a member of the Sea Devils. Click here to listen. It was a good time.

It then occurred to me that I’ve never actually read a Sea Devils comic, so I went and got several inexpensive copies and OH MY LORD ARE THEY FUN! (The 1960-67 DC Comics feature — created by Robert Kanigher and Russ Heath — debuted, as so many did, in Showcase and ran in its own series for 35 issues.)

So, with National Beach Day here — why it’s today as opposed to any other summer day I couldn’t tell you — I decided to celebrate with 13 SEA DEVILS COVERS, which are absolutely, utterly gorgeous, due in no small part to the colors and washtone effects by the late Jack Adler.

And here we are. Let’s dive in, shall we?

  1. The skin textures on those covers are amazing! Was this a spin off of the Sea Hunt craze?

  2. Those grey-tone covers really stand out in comparison to other covers of the time. Just gorgeous.

  3. Sea Devils was a title I scoffed at back then when I was in THE demographic the book was trying to reach. Like you, Dan, I had never read an issue (until this year) and totally agree with you on how much fun the books are. Something very earnest and engaging about the stories. And of course, great collection of covers here.

  4. Those are some stunning covers. I’m always a sucker for undersea adventure shows like Aquaman, the original Sealab 2020 and the old 1967 Moby Dick cartoon, so definately going to have to track down this comic series now. Thank you!
