Coming in January 2026…

I dig Leonardo Romero’s art. He’s got the modernist retro thing down solid. Marvel knows it, and he’s got a series of six variant covers coming in January that echo the Silver Age. Three of them were revealed in the House of Ideas’ solicitations this week.
(UPDATED: Readers have pointed out that these were headed for the cancelled Mighty Marvel Masterworks line. Thanks for the heads up! At least we’re getting these in some format.)
Dig these, along with the issue numbers and sale dates:
The Amazing Spider-Man #19 (Legacy #985). On sale Jan. 7, 2026.

—
Doctor Strange #2. On sale Jan. 14, 2026.

—
Fantastic Four #7. On sale Jan. 7, 2026.

Others to be revealed include X-Men #23, Avengers #34 (Legacy #800) and Thor #6.

I think that’s the case with all of them; that’s definitely the Dr. Strange MMM that got cancelled.

Likewise, the Fantastic Four cover was confirmed for solicitations on the cancelled FF volume 4. I’d wager the X-Men variant will be their cancelled volume 4 cover – pink background, X-Men fighting Juggernaut, Juggernaut punching through Iceman’s blocks of ice, Cyclops blasting away while standing on a chessboard. Displeased that they cancelled the books, but at least the cover art will get a second life.

The shame is when you open between the covers the stories don’t match the feel. I do enjoy the retro style but there is something that is off just a tiny bit (for my taste). I think it is the weight of the inked lines, just to uniform.

Other than the Spidey figure, the rendering is there but not the dynamism. The way Kirby, Buscema, et al, would exaggerate the figures to create the impression of action and movement
