DC to Release SUPERMAN VS. MUHAMMAD ALI Facsimile Edition — IN FULL TREASURY SIZE

Following the success of the Batman/Ra’s al Ghul treasury reprint…

You know what they say: Vote with your dollars.

Hot off the heels of the Limited Collectors’ Edition #C-51 Facsimile Edition — the venerable Batman/Ra’s al Ghul saga released in March in full treasury-edition size — DC in August will be publishing the classic 1978 All New Collectors Edition #56 Facsimile Edition: Superman vs. Muhammad Ali.

Dig the official solicitation info, which will be released formally by DC on Friday:

ALL NEW COLLECTORS’ EDITION #56 FACSIMILE EDITION: SUPERMAN VS. MUHAMMAD ALI

Written by DENNIS O’NEIL
Art by NEAL ADAMS and DICK GIORDANO
Cover by NEAL ADAMS
Foil variant cover by NEAL ADAMS

$14.99 US | 72 pages | Variant $17.99 US
ON SALE 8/27/24

The greatest heavyweight prizefight in the history of comics is returning in a full-size tabloid facsimile edition! With a space armada threatening to destroy the Earth if it loses a contest against the evil Rat’lar’s chosen fighter, Superman and Muhammad Ali must first box each other to determine humanity’s champion for that intergalactic bout. Includes the iconic wraparound cover by Neal Adams with a who’s who of famous people (and comic book creators) in attendance at the fight of the century.

A few thoughts:

Adams’ original cover art

— I think it’s fair to extrapolate that the sales on LCE #51 were strong enough to keep the treasury Facsimile Editions going. This is tremendous news because there are so many opportunities here. Superman vs. Shazam, anyone? Superman vs. Wonder Woman? Limited Collectors’ Edition #C-37, the Batman villains issue?

— DC has three standard-size Facsimile Editions coming in August too. Click here for the details.

— Yes, I will be getting the foil cover.

Obligatory Price Comparison: A non-graded original in very nice shape recently sold on eBay for $240. The book has been reprinted before, in 2010. There was a smaller-size hardcover and a full, tabloid-size hardcover (roughly 10″ x 14″). This is the first time it has been printed as a Facsimile Edition, so this is an incredible bargain.

— Keep coming back to 13th Dimension because we’ve got much more to come on this.

  1. There was a HC full sized facsimile released at the same time as the oversized version back in 2010

    • Dan mentioned that in his article

      • No, he doesn’t.

        • Actually, I did: — Obligatory Price Comparison: A non-graded original in very nice shape recently sold on eBay for $240. The book has been reprinted before, in 2010. • My mistake as I usually skip over the price comparison.

      • In the article as it was originally published, it said the there was an oversized HC, but had never been reprinted as a full sized facsimile. Dan edited the article later that day after I submitted my comment, making it look like I didn’t read it before replying as I did. My intent wasn’t to correct you Dan, but to bring that HC reprint to your attention as I knew it was a favorite story of yours.

        • In 2010, It was a full size hc reprint, but never a full size facsimile . Facsimiles include all of the original ads , reprints do not always do so.

          • Mike, there are no ads in that treasury

  2. I’m glad I read this comic online in the past, because it’s a storyline that’ll forever be remembered.

  5. This is great news! Now if we can get DC and Marvel to agree to do the treasury facsimile of Superman vs Spider Man, that would be tremendous.

  6. This is great news!! I still have my original copy, but it is a bit fragile, so I will definitely be getting one. Keep buying facsimiles everyone!!

    • Facsimiles are all I buy these days. With 4 grandsons all under the age of 5, I’m loving it. I can buy them classic, great adventures from the Gold, Silver and (the best age) the Bronze Age. Maybe they can’t experience the thrill of a modern day comic store but they certainly can thrill to some great stories in brand new condition. And on a spinner rack to boot! I have my original copy and the hard cover edition Dan mentions and I will be getting this edition too.

    • Yeah, O’Neil is in the credits but he left the project early. Neal did the heavy lifting.

      • I don’t think I’ve ever known that. Any reason why Adams didn’t get a co-writer credit? What’s the story behind Dennis leaving?

  7. I like the calls for a reprint of Superman vs the Amazing Spider-Man, but I have a feeling if it happens, that won’t take place until around January ’26, because that will be its 50th anniversary. (According to its listing on Mike’s Amazing World of Comics, it went on sale January 2, 1976.)

I’d like to see a treasury edition of X-Men/Teen Titans, which (as far as I know) has never been printed at a size that would really do justice to the Simonson/Austin art, and would be in line with the other crossover treasuries.

  8. Is the 8/27/24 release date (as per the solicitation) correct? That’s a Tuesday, and I thought DC will be going back to Wednesday ship dates in July.

  9. I hope they don’t botch the cover like the C-51 Facsimile. Cut 1/8″ shorter than the guts, re-did the lettering, used A-I so robins chest is repeated, and ras hand and collar are morphed up…
