SDCC ’25: Kicking off at San Diego Comic-Con this month…

DC Comics has, compared to this year’s Superman hype, somewhat underplayed that 2025 is the company’s 90th anniversary. The most prominent project linked to the landmark is the excellent New History of the DC Universe, written by Mark Waid and featuring a band of top artists.
It appears that’s because DC is using this year to launch a decade-long celebration of the storied publisher that will culminate in its 100th anniversary in 2035. The festivities will begin at 2025 San Diego Comic-Con, which runs (officially) July 24-27. (Wednesday night, July 23, is Preview Night.)

“This year, the DC Booth will have a new, yet familiar, look,” the company said. “In 2025, DC enters the final decade of its first 100 years. With reverence for the past and an embrace of the future, DC plans to celebrate every era of its storied history annually in 10-year increments, starting at the beginning: 1935-1945. The 2025 DC Booth will feature art and experiences from this first decade of publication. This nascent age was a time of unprecedented creation and saw the birth of not only DC, but of the comic book art form with DC’s New Fun #1, superheroes, and the DC Trinity: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman.”
What’s particularly cool is that fans who go to the booth (#4544) will be able to get a free, special edition of the Daily Planet that acts as both a tribute to the Golden Age and a DC convention program. It’ll be available at a ’40s-style newsstand.

“The immersive experience being created at the DC Booth is more than a nostalgic nod to the past, it’s a celebration of where it all began,” the company stated. “Stop by the DC newsstand for a free 1940s-style Daily Planet newspaper, complete with classic DC Comics ads, pulled direct from DC’s comic book archives, that once promoted the heroes and adventures of their time! SDCC’s Daily Planet exclusive also delivers first looks at some of DC’s most anticipated titles releasing this year, as well as DC’s panel schedule and events offered during San Diego Comic-Con 2025.”
That mention of New Fun #1 adds an extra layer of context to September’s upcoming publication of the mag as a Famous First Edition-size Facsimile Edition. Time will tell what the San Diego announcement may or may not herald for DC’s Facsimile Edition program — or any other publishing initiatives, for that matter.
DC also announced its full programming slate. There’s also an expansion of the publisher’s 11″ x 17″ Giant-Size line and you can read about that here. You can also get a SNEAK PEEK at the merch that will be on sale. Click here for that.

Truly wondering how the copyright/public domain issues with the characters will play out.
