DC in September will release a startling seven Facsimile Editions. A lot of them deserve their own spotlight, so make sure you check out the links at the bottom of this post. You will be so glad you did.
Three of those issues are Watchmen #1 and V for Vendetta #1 — an Alan Moore two-fer — and 1993’s Wonder Woman #72, which includes the latest Super Powers variant.

— Since this is Watchmen’s 40th anniversary year, I figured this Facsimile would be coming. I wondered whether we’d get the full 12-issue run across a year, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
— No variants listed for Watchmen, but that can change.
— V for Vendetta, which was first published in the UK, is not celebrating an anniversary but a TV show is in development at HBO.
— Obligatory Price Comparison #1: An unslabbed, NM original 1986 Watchmen #1 recently sold on eBay for $275.
— Obligatory Price Comparison #2: An unslabbed, high-grade original 1988 V for Vendetta #1 went for $60.

I’m going to be very disappointed if they don’t give us the entire 12 issue run of Watchmen!
I’ll have to wait and see if issue two is announced before I even consider buying issue one.
For me, this would be just like when they released a facsimile of Batman #676 without completing the rest of the issues through #681. In that instance I only bought the foil variant.

The practice of releasing a facsimile because it’s got a hot cover but leaving the story incomplete is awful.
I got the Iron Man #149 facsimile yesterday (via eBay, because the blind bag thing is a whole other problem). Great story, great art, famous for the cover of Iron Man visible in Dr. Doom’s eye. It ends on a cliffhanger and Iron Man #150 would be a great facsimile as well. (Iron Man! Dr. Doom! Great cover! Double-sized story where they fight in Camelot!) Hasn’t happened.

Six new facsimiles? You’re killing me, Dan.
By September, DC will be up to 186 published (or announced) facsimiles. They’re now WELL ahead of Marvel, who will be at 167 in September. (Two of DC’s are announced but not scheduled yet: Batman #497 and Swamp Thing #1.)
I had to expand my list a little. It turns out that DC had some convention exclusives of Booster Gold #1, The Authority #1, and, gak, All-Star Comics #58. They’re only available on eBay at this point, and not cheap. I’m adding them to the tally, though–and hopefully I can splurge for a reasonably price someday.
Batman continues to dominate at 66 reprints between “Batman” and Detective, plus various assorted specials. In the early issues, we now have Batman #1, 5, 9, and now 11. Maybe they should just reprint #2-4, 7-8, 10, and 12 to round out Batman’s first year.
Superman finally gets another issue. About time. He’ll probably never catch up to Batman, but good for him for trying.
Watchmen gives us one more comic that, up until now, had a DC Millennium Edition but not a full facsimile. That leaves, oh, 29 books that still only have a Millennium copy. Maybe we’ll get that Superboy #1 or Gen 13 #1 someday.
