SUNDAY FUNNIES WITH KERRY CALLEN!

By KERRY CALLEN
In the years 2009 to 2012, there existed an active website called Covered: Artists Re-Interpreting Comic Covers. It contained a lot of fantastic work by a wide variety of artists. It also contained some of my work.
At the time, I had gotten out of the habit of drawing and decided to start again. I contributed eight reimagined covers. In many ways, it’s where I developed my own current “superhero art” style. I thought it would be fun to share them here at 13th Dimension!

Ever since I saw a house advertisement for Showcase #61 as a kid, I was incredibly intrigued by the Spectre, a character of which I knew nothing. Drawn by Murphy Anderson, the book had a fantastic cover! From that single ad, I remembered it my entire life. I finally bought it sometime in my 40s. (It came out in January 1966 — almost 60 years ago!)

Later, I drew my own version. I know it’s uncommon, but I always liked seeing heroes winning the battle on their covers! I added the moon, just to help out the Spectre a little.

Take that, Shathan the Eternal!
