NEVER STEP ON A SCORPION Like You’ve Never Seen It Before

DESPOP TUESDAYS! Doing riffs on famous covers is nothing new in comics and it’s something we play around with at 13th Dimension all the time. But here’s one by Des Taylor you just have to take an extra minute to really appreciate. First, here’s the original — 1965’s The Amazing Spider-Man #29, by Steve Ditko: Now, Des’ version: Des makes everything look like the animated series or movie you always wish would happen. His skill with this style is extraordinary. Now, I am a big fan of covers that give you above-and-below views of the action, like this 1960 Journey Into Mystery #65 cover by Jack Kirby and Ditko: But what Des does to set his apart is really play up the splashing-water effect that actually, dare I say, improves upon the original. Now, I get that technologies are different today and it’s not necessarily apples to apples, but talent is talent. And that’s exactly what you need if you’re going to walk in the footsteps of giants. — Want more DESPOP TUESDAYS? Come back next week! Want a commission? Buy prints? Buy Des’ comics? Get Ready for… THE BLUE LOTUS STRIKES

DESPOP TUESDAYS! It’s been teased for quite some time, but now our pal Des Taylor is ready to unleash his latest creator-owned book — The Blue Lotus Strikes — through Kickstarter. The Blue Lotus, in gestation since at least 2024, is full of everything you love about mid-century adventure entertainment: espionage, action, humor, suave men — and gorgeous women, particularly the lead herself. Here’s a SNEAK PEEK at four cover designs for the book: There are tons to expect in and around this graphic story book and Des explains all in this promo video: Much more to come on this one, folks. You’ll dig it! — Want more DESPOP TUESDAYS? Come back next week! Want a commission? Buy prints? Buy Des’ comics?
