BATMAN: YEAR ONE — Real Heroes Ride Bicycles

It’s WORLD BICYCLE DAY!

When people talk about Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s Batman: Year One, they tend to talk about the big moments, like when Jim Gordon kicks Flass and his flunkies’ collective asses, or the young Dark Knight escapes a murderous SWAT force into a thick swarm of bats he summoned with an ultrasonic device hidden in his boot heel. The latter scene is so memorable Christopher Nolan lifted it lock, stock and barrel for Batman Begins:

As great as those set pieces are, I also love the small moments, the ones that show just what kind of hero Bruce Wayne is. Like when he saves the cat during that SWAT siege…

… or in the story’s climax when, faced with a moment where none of his gadgets, none of his wealth, none of his tricks, will help — 37-YEAR-OLD SPOILER ALERT — he jumps on a bicycle to save the day:

Is there a better way to celebrate World Bicycle Day today?

(Well, yeah, how about being a hero like my wife, Wendy, an avid cyclist who rides her bike everywhere, around the neighborhood and on trips across the globe.)

Boy, I can’t wait to see this scene in the upcoming Batman: Year One Artist’s Edition.

  1. WOW, Dan, I’ve always loved the 13th Dimension and have been impressed with your work but this one brings it to a whole new level of love. Celebrating World Bicycle Day with Batman’s stolen bicycle (or should it be his first “bat-bicycle”)
