Plus, Jonah Hex, Vixen, the Demon, and Static return with new series…
Some compelling DC news coming out of San Diego Comic-Con so far — Batman: Shadow of the Bat is making a comeback, and fan faves like Jonah Hex, the Demon, Static and Vixen are all getting new series (ongoing and otherwise). Plus, main Batman and Absolute Batman will be splitting a special issue with new stories for September’s Batman Day.
I particularly dig this beautiful teaser image for Deniz Camp and Javier Rodriguez’s Batman: Shadow of the Bat, which takes the Dark Knight back to the chemical plant that gave us the Joker.
Camp and Rodriguez have wowed fans with their Absolute Martian Manhunter, so there will be a lot of eyes on this one. Oh, hell, it’s a Batman title, so there’ll be a lot of eyes on it anyway. The series will be at least spiritually connected to the flagship Batman title and Detective Comics.
Other highlights:
— Batman of Two Worlds #1, coming for September 19’s Batman Day, will feature a main Batman story by Matt Fraction and Javi Fernández, alongside an Absolute Batman story by Scott Snyder and Nick Derington.

— Jonah Hex and the Shadow of Death will be a six-issue mini by Michael Walsh.

— The Demon will be by James Harren.
—
— Vixen will be by Stephanie Williams and Khary Randolph.
—
— Static will be by Cody Ziglar and Diego Olortegui.

I love Jonah Hex, but I’m not looking forward to this. I will probably wait for the collected edition to read it. (I hate being a downer; I know this will probably be someone’s favorite read.)

Don’t feel bad. It’s also hard for me to get excited about anything new DC has to offer these days.
The only thing that they have for me is mostly reprints.
They have become a tree that grows canned fruit.

I remember trying the last Etrigan and Jonah Hex stories that debuted back in 2011. Both Demon Knights and All Star Western were quickly dropped from my pull list.
Recent Batman comics have been so pedestrian to me. I feel absolutely numb towards them.
The only thing DC has to offer me these days is the promise of more reprints. I’m saving my money for the wellspring of Bronze Age Batman that will be coming out in September followed by silver age 2 and golden age 4. Also looking forward to Grant Morrison Batman Tpb 3.
The last Batman comic that I truly enjoyed was the main story in Batman/Deadpool. Matt Fraction and Scott Snyder just don’t do it for me.
