BATMAN DANCE PARTY: Swing It Sixties-Style With the Hit Record You’ve Never Heard

JERRY ORDWAY’s BAT-TASTIC BIRTHDAY WEEK — DAY 4, Featuring DJ Curt Swan!

Some of my favorite pieces that Walt Grogan has colored over the years have been illustrated by Jerry Ordway. So, we decided to celebrate Jerry’s upcoming birthday Thursday — Da Ordster will be 67 — with five days of gorgeous color renditions of black-and-white sketches.

Some Jerry pencilled, some he inked. All are fab. Walt chose to take this celebration to Gotham City, so here’s our fourth of five installments of JERRY ORDWAY’s BAT-TASTIC BIRTHDAY WEEK.

Let’s face it: There were a ton of Batman records in the Swingin’ Sixties — but this would have been the best of them. That’s Curt Swan’s pencils there capturing Batman mid-frug. (I guess he got tired of the Batusi.) Inks by Jerry, the rest is all Walt:

Hey baby won’t you take a chance? Say that you’ll let me have this dance…

Well, LET’S DANCE!

Here’s the B&W version:

A 10-year-old Walt Grogan fell in love with the Big Red Cheese thanks to essays written by Dick Lupoff and Don Thompson in the paperback edition of All in Color for a Dime, released in 1970 and bought for him by his father off a paperback spinner rack in a liquor store on the South Side of Chicago. Walt runs The Marvel Family Web Facebook page devoted to all incarnations of the Fawcett/DC Captain Marvel and blogs about Captain Marvel at shazamshistorama.com.

  1. Batman’s Dance Party? I can’t help but mentally picture Adam West in costume doing the Batusi . . . And geez, those song titles–I still can’t help but mentally picture Adam West in costume doing the Batusi . . .

  2. And the ordering coupon (or whatever it’s properly called) at the lower right has me confused. You fill out your ordering info as to where your Batman Dance Party record should be sent–and by implication as ordering in the states (“State,” “Zip Code”).

But the bottom of the ordering coupon says “OFFER VOID in the continental United States.” Wait. What?

So only Alaskans, Hawaiians, and persons in US territories (and beyond?) can boogie with Bats with this offer?

    Holy Confusion Batman!
