BATMAN #1: Landmark 1940 Issue to Be Re-Released as a FACSIMILE EDITION

EXCLUSIVE: One of FOUR more Facsimile Editions coming in August and September from DC…

DC’s September solicitations are due next week but we’ve got an EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PEEK at four more major Facsimile Edition releases that are on tap for the month (and August).*

And because each issue deserves its own story, we’re going to unveil one a day over four days.

First up? 1940’s Batman #1. Dig the official solicitation info:

BATMAN #1 FACSIMILE EDITION

Written by BILL FINGER
Art by BOB KANE, JERRY ROBINSON, and SHELDON MOLDOFF
Cover by BOB KANE and JERRY ROBINSON

Foil variant cover by BOB KANE and JERRY ROBINSON ($8.99 US)
Blank sketch cover ($7.99 US)
$6.99 US | 64 pages
ON SALE 9/12/23

In this classic issue, the Caped Crusader and Boy Wonder have their first encounters with the Clown Prince of Crime—The Joker—and a cruise-ship cat burglar known as the Cat—who would later be known as Catwoman! Plus, Hugo Strange returns with an army of mindless henchmen at his command. Will the Dark Knight triumph over Strange’s giants? Find out in this thrilling facsimile edition of Batman #1, featuring all the original stories, backup features, and ads from 1940!

A few thoughts:

— This isn’t the first time we’ve gotten a full-on reprint of Batman #1. The most noteworthy version is probably 1974’s Famous 1st Edition tabloid, one of the great publications of the Bronze Age. That said, this is the first time we’ve gotten this issue in DC’s Facsimile Edition program.

Sketch Cover Alert! I dig it. Love having covers with just classic trade dress on them. It’s a thing.

Batman #1 isn’t just a landmark that features the first appearances of the Joker and Catwoman, it’s a cracking good comic book through and through. Every story is a winner and that’s no lie.

* The Omega Men #3 Facsimile Edition has already been announced for August. Click here.

Obligatory Price Comparison: Good luck trying to find an unslabbed original. But a 9.4 slabbed copy was sold through Heritage Auctions in January 2021 for $2,220,000, including buyer’s premium. The Facsimile Edition runs seven bucks. (There are 64 pages.)

    • No, not really. We don’t need clicks at all. We don’t sell ads. So we do things for fun. I know it’s hard to believe that some people just want to have fun online but there you have it. Thanks for stopping by!

          • Will this increase in value over the years?

          • Probably. Facsimile Editions have become collectibles themselves. But I wouldn’t get it for speculation purposes. Not gonna be enough RTO. Just get it if you dig it. Any extra value is just a nice bonus.
