BATMADNESS Match-Up 8: THE LAUGHING FISH vs. PERCHANCE TO DREAM

VOTE in BATMADNESS: The Animated Tournament…

Welcome to BATMADNESS: The Animated Tournament — your chance to VOTE for the greatest Batman: The Animated Series episode of all time.

Writer Fred Van Lente, a 13th Dimension regular, and his artistic collaborator Ryan Dunlavey have produced The Comic Book History of Animation — a five-part series whose Issue #2 is out Dec. 23 from IDW. To celebrate, we’re holding a tourney to pick the best episode from the greatest comic-book animated series of them all — and YOU get to decide.

Fred and Ryan have seeded eight episodes each for a Sweet 16 and we’ll be pairing them off until we have a champion in January. (Click here to follow the whole tournament.)

HOW TO VOTE: You can pick your choice two ways: 1) Note it in the comments below; or 2) Take part in our Twitter poll, also below. Votes will be tabulated and the winner will be announced in the following round.

We’re up to MATCH-UP #8: THE LAUGHING FISH (Ryan’s No. 1 seed) vs. PERCHANCE TO DREAM (Fred’s No. 8 seed)

Written by Paul Dini. Directed by Bruce Timm.

“With a plot adapted from classic comics by Denny O’Neil, Neal Adams, Steve Engelhart and Marshall Rogers, it’s easily the Joker’s best episode, showcasing the Clown Prince of Crime’s signature intelligence, menace and lowbrow ‘humor’ in every scene.” — RD

Teleplay by Joe R. Lansdale. Story by Laren Bright and Michael Reaves. Directed by Boyd Kirkland.

“I didn’t think very fondly of this episode until I rewatched it recently, and found its retread of the Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons Superman classic For the Man Who Has Everything oddly touching, largely because of Kevin Conroy’s great, tortured performance as Batman, who wakes up to find his life as a vigilante is a bad dream. The big twist in this episode is total BS: Based on my own dreams, you can totally read in them.” — FVL

Now, which do YOU prefer? VOTE!

  1. Perchance to Dream gets the slight edge. Anytime you can get inside the head of Batman is a good episode. Over the Edge is the best of the series – a true nightmare vs the dream in this episode.

    • “Over the Edge” is a good episode, but is from The *New* Batman Adventures, and therefore ineligible for this competition…!

  2. The Laughing Fish is a great adaptation of a great comic story…but Perchance to Dream is more important to BTAS, so I have to go with that one.
