AQUALAD RISES: Dig Doc Shaner’s Superb TEEN TITANS Character Variant Cover

World’s Finest: Teen Titans’ finale makes a splash…

When it comes down to it, my favorite current comics series is World’s Finest: Teen Titans, by Mark Waid and Emanuela Lupacchino. The six-part mini is a deeply felt love letter to the original Titans of the Silver and Bronze Ages and I will really miss it when it comes to an end in December.

It’s also had a helluva run of variants, most notably Doc Shaner’s character covers, which will spotlight Aqualad for Issue #6.

Check this out — as well as the solicitation copy and the rest of the issue’s covers, released Friday by DC:

Shaner, man

WORLD’S FINEST: TEEN TITANS #6

Written by MARK WAID
Art by EMANUELA LUPACCHINO
Cover by CHRIS SAMNEE
Variant covers by EVAN “DOC” SHANER and DAN MORA
1:25 variant cover by JILL THOMPSON

THE SUPER-SHOWDOWN! It’s the Teen Titans versus the Anti-Titans in the melee of the miniseries, with Lilith, Gnarrk, and Mal joining in on the side of our heroes! After the last blow is dealt, the Titans must face something even more uncertain than battle: change. Mal helps Aqualad make sense of his dating dilemma. Bumblebee second-guesses her growing feelings for Mal. Donna must choose between Paradise Island and Man’s World. And Robin and Speedy try to reach a resolution.

A few thoughts:

— I really want Waid and Lupacchino to go back to this well. And, of course, I will continue to hammer the drum for an early-days Batman and Robin series that takes place in this World’s Finest “some time ago” universe. My first choice for artist? I keep saying, Chris Samnee! Manifest, folks! Manifest!

— Hey, Mal as the Guardian! As it always should have been — and should be. How about a Guardian/Bumblebee mini? That could be fun!

— I’ve been collecting the Shaner character covers. But the other variants are great too. This is one of those cases where I just know I’ll also be buying the inevitable trade collection.
