We had a great time here at 13th Dimension bringing you Apes Week. We conclude — with the exception of an epilogue tomorrow — with Boom! Studios’ POTA comics writer Corinna Bechko‘s list of the Best of the Apes:
By CORINNA SARA BECHKO
— The “apeonauts” that kick off “Escape from the Planet of the Apes.” I love the astronauts returning, taking their helmets off, and revealing that there are chimpanzees instead of humans in the space suits. (This also made my silliest list!)
Caesar’s rebellious speech in “Conquest of the Planet of the Apes,” and the final mercy he shows the humans when his love, Lisa, uses her newly discovered voice to change the course of history.
Taylor’s discovery of the Statue of Liberty, and his despair at finally understanding that he’s been on his own planet the whole time at the end of “Planet of the Apes.” No list is complete without that.
Zira and Cornelius sacrificing themselves for the sake of their baby at the end of “Escape from the Planet of the Apes.” So much tragedy for a film that starts off so whimsically!
Zaius leading the charge through the wall of fire in “Beneath the Planet of the Apes” as the gorilla army rides on the Forbidden Zone. This one moment says more about Zaius’ character, resolve and intellect than the whole of the rest of the film.
