13 SPLASH PAGES: The IRON MAN of DON HECK

A BIRTHDAY SALUTE to the late comics workhorse, who was born 95 years ago, on Jan. 2, 1929…

Don Heck never got the credit but he was the kind of artist essential to the comics industry: the workhorse. Never a star, sometimes maligned, but in there, month after month, helping to bring you your favorite stories and characters.

One of Heck’s best-known runs was on Marvel’s Iron Man, a superhero he helped to forge, in Tales of Suspense.

So here are 13 SPLASH PAGES from the 1960s.

Right on.

  1. Apparently, “N. Korok” is the nom de FOOM of Don Rico, a Golden Age writer/editor who was an important figure at Timely/Atlas in the 40s and 50s. He only did three Silver Age Marvel books–two of which are here, one of which is the introduction of the Black Widow. That’s cool–maybe cooler than some of the Heck illustrations…

  2. What a great collection. I guess Don Heck is the reason early-1960s Iron Man is my favorite.

  3. Next up on my stack of future readings is the TwoMorrows’ look at the artist Don Heck. I’ve a feelin’ my early ‘80s impression is going to change dramatically.
