13 SPLASH PAGES: A BERNIE WRIGHTSON Birthday Celebration

The late, great horror maven was born 74 years ago…

Though there are many artists who can lay a similar claim, in my mind the late Bernie Wrightson — born 74 years ago on Oct. 27, 1948 — is probably the greatest horror artist of them all.

Among his many accomplishments was his groundbreaking work with Len Wein and Joe Orlando on Swamp Thing, whose solo series debuted 50 years ago this past summer.

With that in mind, we bring you this year’s birthday salute — 13 SPLASH PAGES from that landmark run.

Far out.

  1. I still miss Berni; his artwork and mastery of the macabre was masterful!

  2. Excellent choices! He created such atmosphere. The second and the third remind me of Eisner splashes for “The Spirit.”
