13 GREEN LANTERN Illustrations: A MARTIN NODELL Birthday Celebration

The creator of Alan Scott, the OG GL, was born 108 years ago…

The late artist Martin Nodell was born 108 years ago, on Nov. 15, 1915. Without question, his most enduring contribution to the world of comics was Green Lantern, created with Bill Finger — the 1940 original, Alan Scott, who inspired a whole corps of successors across the decades.

For this year’s birthday tribute, we bring you 13 GREEN LANTERN ILLUSTRATIONS, culled from the archives of Heritage Auctions.

For the dark things cannot stand the light… the light of the Green Lantern!

  1. I have always loved the character as he was originally conceived. I met Mr. Nodell at a comic con in the Detroit area years ago. I wish I had thought to get a picture with him. He was there selling green mouse pads with head shots of GL. I proudly display it to this day.

  2. I replied to an ad he posted in a magazine seeking copies of a modern GL comic in which his art appeared. I had a copy. He sent me a letter explaining he got the copies he needed but included a sketch of Alan Scott’s face on it. What a nice guy.
