13 GREAT BATMAN COVERS: A Win Mortimer Birthday Celebration

The late artist was born 101 years ago…

Of all the Batman artists who adhered to the house style in the Golden Age — i.e., ghosted for Bob Kane — Win Mortimer is one of my favorites.

Mortimer, who was born May 1, 1919, drew some killer covers, many of which are exceptionally well known. We’ve highlighted them in the past, in fact.

But for this year’s 13 COVERS birthday celebration, we present some of his lesser-known — but still quite dramatic — work. And you can find links to other galleries below.

Swell!

  1. What a great collection of covers. He was a master. It’s shameless how they were kept from being recognized by name by the industry in those days.

    • I know — and these aren’t even his best. The two previous selections are even better!

  2. Great selection! Mortimer’s more illustrative style was a nice change of pace. He was THE cover guy at DC for many, many years, and he brought some nice cohesion to the DC Universe as it was, across multiple characters like Superman and Batman.

    • I love him. And I’ve noted this before but one of the things I like is that he inverted the eye slots in Batman’s mask, unlike most GA artists. Gave him a bit of an edge.

      • True! Early Kane Batman had that, but the round-side-up look is definitely more benign. Of course BTAS would make a meal out of that look!

  3. The DC covers of the late 40s/early 50s are my favorites and I think that’s mostly due to Win Mortimer. The layouts were so dynamic and had a sense of fun about them. You really want to open that comic book based on the cover.
