13 COVERS: The WONDER WOMAN of DICK GIORDANO

A BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE to one of comics’ most respected talents…

When I think of Dick Giordano — the greatest inker who ever lived — I immediately think of Batman. For one thing, I immediately think of Batman because I never stop thinking about Batman to begin with. And because Giordano played a crucial role in defining Batman’s look in the Bronze Age.

But, as the saying goes, Giordano was much, much more than that. His pencil, ink brush or editing pen touched virtually every character in the DC Universe (and that’s not to sleep on his influential run at Charlton or even his brief dalliances with Marvel and Atlas/Seaboard.) Plus, don’t forget his essential work on the soon-to-be-released DC Comics Style Guide.

So for this year’s 13 COVERS birthday tribute — the late Giordano was born 92 years ago, on July 20, 1932 — we’re going Wonder Woman in white. Giordano penciled or inked each one of these.

Right on.

  1. In the early ‘70s when my comic budget depended 100% on the will of my dad’s wallet, the only issues of WW I ever bought had JLA members on the covers detailing her trials to return to full superhero status.

  2. I like this period of Wonder Woman. Love that cover for issue 201. Dick Giordano was a great artist and inker. I remember being bummed out when he stopped inking Perez on Crisis on Infinite Earths after issue 3 ( no offense to Jerry Ordway) Happy Birthday Mr Giordano, one of the greats.

That version of Selina Kyle is the centerpiece of a Bat-centric tattoo I got.
